The player plays as a shirtless man named Diogenes, named after real life Greek philosopher Diogenes the Cynic, who is stuck in a cauldron. Armed with only a Yosemite hammer, Diogenes attempts to scale an incredibly tall mountain. The game is intentionally designed to be infuriatingly difficult. While the game is short and can be completed in one sitting, there are no checkpoints, so a single mistake can cost the player a large amount of progress, or, in the worst case scenario be sent back to the beginning. The game is notable for being accompanied by a commentary by creator Foddy himself where he discusses the game, its inspirations, and its themes. The game itself was inspired by the 2002 Czech video game Sexy Hiking.
